Fraction Models is a tool that displays all the ways fractions can be expressed. It is a great way to explore fractions and develop a deeper understanding of them. It will show you a fraction as a fraction, a mixed number, a decimal, a percent, and visually in a portioned drawing. Students can manipulate the numerators and the denominators.

This resource is for 6th-8th grade. The level of complexity of the fractions can be adjusted to match students level.

Evaluation of App

The app is very easy to manipulate. It is clear and visually appealing.

Benefits/Challenges 

 This app is a great way to have students explore fractions and gain a deeper understanding of them. This app could also be translated easier to a reference/notes sheet to help struggling students.

One thing I wish this app did was allow students to visualize operations with fractions. I think that would make this resource even better.

TA Chapters 6 & 7 Chapter 6: Use and Connect Mathematical Representations Chapter 7: Facilitate Meaningful Mathematical Discourse Summary: Chapter 6 discusses the importance of using representations such as manipulatives and drawings to model mathematical concepts. These visual tools can help students better understand what they are doing before they start solving problems more abstractly. Chapter 7 discusses the importance of the methods of teaching mathematics. One of the major discourses discussed was discussions whether these are whole class, small group, or partner discussions. Discussing concepts can help students put their ideas into words leading to a better understanding of mathematics.  Implications for Future Teaching: One of the major things I got from these two chapters is the importance of variety in instruction. Manipulative Activities

Manipulative Activities  When students are using manipulatives, it is important that teachers question them in ways to monitor their understanding. Teachers questions should guide students from manipulative to abstract thinking. Teachers can assess students understanding and growth through students answers to these questions. They can also assess the students ability to move away from the manipulatives after a certain period of time. When students are working in groups, students may be given roles to make sure each student is accountable for their learning. Students should rotate roles, so that each student gets to experience and practice with each role. When students are working in groups, teachers may individually question students or allow students to build off of each others answers.  Students problem solving skills are improving when using manipulatives, because you are giving them something to physically move around and work with.
